Who We Are

M. Roberts Media, LLC is a diversified media and marketing solutions company that delivers unique experiences for consumers and advertisers across all platforms. Beyond the daily Victoria Advocate, Longview News-Journal and Tyler Morning Telegraph newspapers and their associated digital brands, M. Roberts Media also includes the Panola Watchman, a bi-weekly newspaper and associated website in Carthage, Texas; the Marshall News Messenger, a daily newspaper and associated websites in Marshall, Texas; the Kilgore News Herald, a weekly newspaper and associated websites in Kilgore, Texas; M. Roberts Digital, a full-service marketing agency serving all of East Texas and Victoria; commercial printing and distribution services; events production and marketing; and other products serving South and East Texas.


M. Roberts Media is a family-owned company that traces its roots back to Morris Roberts’ role in a conglomerate that acquired the Victoria Advocate in 1942. In 1961, Roberts purchased all stock and became sole owner of the Advocate. He shared ownership with his son, John M. Roberts, who serves as Chairman of the Board, and daughter Catherine R. McHaney, who is Secretary-Treasurer. The third generation of family leadership is embodied in Roberts’ grandson, Stephen McHaney, who is publisher of the Longview News-Journal as well as President of M. Roberts Media, and Dan Easton, who is married to his granddaughter, and is publisher of the Advocate.

2012 (June) The Victoria Advocate Publishing Company forms Texas Community Media, LLC to acquire the Longview News-Journal, The Marshall News Messenger, The Panola Watchman plus weeklies including the Atlanta Citizens Journal, The Big Sandy & Hawkins Journal, Bowie County Citizens Tribune, Cass County Sun, The Daingerfield Bee, The Glade Mirror, The Grand Saline Sun, Lindale News & Times, Mineola Monitor, The Pittsbugh Gazette and Wood County Democrat

2012 (November) Texas Community Media sells Atlanta Citizens Journal, The Big Sandy & Hawkins Journal, Bowie County Citizens Tribune, Cass County Sun, The Daingerfield Bee, The Glade Mirror, The Grand Saline Sun, Lindale News & Times, Mineola Monitor, The Pittsburgh Gazette and Wood County Democrat

2015 M. Roberts Media is formed to encompass both Victoria Advocate Publishing Company and Texas Community Media

2018 (November) M. Roberts Media acquires the Tyler Morning Telegraph and Butler Creative Group creating one of the largest media and marketing companies in East Texas

2018 (December) M. Roberts Media acquires the Kilgore News Herald in Kilgore, TX


Stephen McHaney

Stephen McHaney has more than 20 years of experience in the media industry. His experience includes stints as Director of New Media and Vice President/CFO of the Victoria Advocate. He most recently served as Co-Publisher of the Victoria Advocate prior to relocating to East Texas to take the helm as Publisher at the Longview News-Journal in 2012. Stephen earned a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 and a Master of Business Administration degree from Texas Christian University in 2004. Stephen and his wife, Amy, reside in Longview with their four children.


Justin Wilcox

Justin Wilcox has over 25 years of experience in the newspaper industry. Prior to joining M. Roberts Media he was the President of Northeast Tennessee Media Group in Johnson City, TN for 7 years. He spent 3 years with Media Newsgroup in the Bay Area as Publisher of the Daily News and Silicon Valley Community Newspapers. And spent 3 years in San Antonio, TX as the VP of sales for Prime Time Newspapers a division of Hearst. He is a native of Michigan where he grew up in the newspaper business working alongside his family. Justin is excited to return to Texas with his wife Lisa and daughter Olivia and call East Texas his permanent home.

Bret Jacomet serves as the Vice President of Technology and is also responsible for the company’s digital services including M. Roberts Digital, a full service agency.  He has over 20 years of experience in the media industry and prior to joining M. Roberts Media, he was the Vice President of Digital for the Sandusky Media Group, VP of Sales and Marketing for KPC Media Group, Regional Digital Director and GM of Online Classifieds for Freedom Communications.  Bret lives in East Texas with his wife Candace and has four children.


Tim Thorsen  Tim Thorsen

  Vice President of Audience – M. Roberts Media

From West Texas to South Florida, with stops in between, Tim Thorsen has more than 25 years of experience in the journalism business. He comes to M. Roberts Media from the USA TODAY’s Florida Network, where he was responsible for the delivery of high-quality content across all digital and print platforms. Tim is a native of Virginia who is thrilled to return to the Lone Star State with his wife, Laura, and son, Alexander. He also looks forward to introducing his daughter, Kathryn, to Longview when she is on break from college.

Commercial Print Services

TCM Printing is a commercial print operation capable of printing news publications, magazine products, brochures, Inserts and catalogs. TCM Printing has a 16 unit newspaper press capable of printing 32 pages in one pass with running speeds of up to 35,000 copies an hour. A second press is an eight unit perfecting press that can print color on both sides in one pass. This press uses UV inks and is able to run enamel/coated paper stocks. TCM printing also has a bindery to produce a high-quality finished product.
